Danny O’Rawe ND MSc FIRH

I first started learning herbal medicine seriously on a 10 acre smallholding back in the late 1980’s, following a few years of dabbling. I established my first herb garden there and learned how to cultivate herbs and to forage from nearby fields and hedgerows. What began as a hobby eventually turned into a career. I went on to obtain an RHS Certificate in organic cultivation in 2002 and Diplomas in herbal medicine and aromatherapy. I then began a 6 year study of naturopathic medicine in 2004 towards my ND, and I am now a registered Naturopath with the General Naturopathic Council. I also specialise in nutritional therapy, and was senior lecturer in Nutrition for The College of Naturopathic Medicine in Belfast until 2016.

I have also sojourned in South America, learning native traditions, and studied with renowned US herbalist David Winston, completing his practitioner program in 2014. I finished my MSc in Herbal Medicine at the University of Central Lancashire in 2015. My research has always tried to strike a balance between evidence-based medicine, empiricism and traditional wisdom, which led into another career in lecturing. I have since lectured across the world and have given presentations to the Irish Register of Herbalists, the American Herbalist Guild, the Scottish School of Herbal Medicine and the National Institute of Medical Herbalists among others. I established the first practitioner-level school in herbal medicine in N. Ireland in 2015.

In 2014 I was awarded a Fellowship by the Irish Register of Herbalists for my services to the association and the herbal tradition in Ireland. I have written a number of technical and historical papers for various publications and peer-reviewed journals, and my book co-authored with Keith Robertson Celtic Herbal Medicine was published in 2018. My dedication is drawing upon all these strands, while encouraging personal responsibility for health.
